What hreflang tags do
hreflang tells Google which language and region each version of a page is for, so
the right version shows to the right searcher and your translated pages don’t compete with
each other as duplicates. They’re essential the moment you ship the same content in more
than one language or for more than one country.
The two rules people get wrong
- They must be reciprocal. If your English page points to the Spanish page, the Spanish page must point back. One-way references are ignored.
- Every page lists the whole set — including itself. Each URL in a language
group carries the full list of alternates, self-referencing tag included, plus an
x-defaultfor unmatched users.
Where to add them in Webflow
For static pages, paste the tags into Page Settings → Custom Code → inside <head>. For CMS-driven pages, use field bindings in the Collection page’s
head so each item outputs its own set. Webflow’s native Localization adds hreflang
automatically — this generator is for manual setups, Weglot/Linguana edge cases, and

Validate before you ship
After publishing, confirm the tags resolve and reciprocate with a crawler (Ahrefs, Screaming Frog) or Google Search Console’s International Targeting report. A single broken return tag quietly disables hreflang for the whole cluster.
