Webflow vs Wix: when does paying more make sense?
Wix is cheaper and easier. Webflow is more capable and cleaner. Here is the honest tradeoff for each kind of team.
Wix ships the fastest website builder on the market. Point, click, type — you have a live site before lunch. Webflow takes longer to learn and costs more per month. For a certain kind of business, Webflow is still the better choice. Here is how to tell which one you are.
At a glance
| Webflow | Wix | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed to first site | Days | Hours |
| Learning curve | Steep | Very gentle |
| Template library | ~5,000 | ~900+ |
| Design freedom | Very high (custom CSS) | Medium (template-bounded) |
| CMS | Mature, relational | Yes, simpler |
| SEO controls | Granular | Good, but less precise |
| Ecommerce | Yes | Yes, more mature |
| Agency handoff | Strong | Limited |
| Price range | Mid | Low |
Design freedom
This is where Webflow earns its price.
Wix’s Editor is a drag-and-drop canvas with absolute positioning, which is easy for first-time users but tends to produce sites that look like a Wix site. Wix Studio (the newer pro-oriented editor) closed much of this gap and now supports responsive breakpoints and CSS-flex layouts. It is genuinely good — but it is still bounded by the platform’s component library.
Webflow gives you the raw building blocks: HTML structure, real CSS classes, flexbox and grid, custom breakpoints, and full access to interactions. If your design deviates from “standard SaaS marketing page,” you will appreciate the extra rope.
CMS
Both have a CMS. Wix’s works well for a blog, store, or portfolio and is accessible to non-technical editors. Webflow’s is more powerful once you need multi-reference collections, complex filtering, or static-site output for performance. If you can describe your content model in a spreadsheet, Wix is fine. If you start drawing lines between collections, Webflow starts earning its keep.
SEO
Wix has made huge strides here. Native meta, sitemaps, robots, and schema controls are all present. The gap with Webflow today is about the edges:
- Custom
<head>injection per page: easier on Webflow - Advanced schema beyond the presets: easier on Webflow
- 301 redirect management: cleaner on Webflow
- Markup bloat: Wix pages tend to ship more client-side JavaScript, which can hurt Lighthouse scores on mobile
For a small-business site where “show up in Google for my city and service” is the goal, Wix SEO is plenty. For a SaaS marketing site competing on buyer-intent keywords, Webflow’s surface area is worth it.
Ecommerce
Wix eCommerce is more mature than Webflow Ecommerce. If you are running a store with more than 100 SKUs, Shopify or Wix will both out-ship Webflow’s native commerce. Webflow commerce is best for small catalogs where the site-design lead is the bottleneck.
Pricing
Wix’s entry tier costs roughly half of Webflow’s equivalent. For a hobby site or a local service business, Wix delivers more for less. For a marketing site that drives revenue, the delta is noise against the value of the site doing its job.
Who should pick which
Pick Wix if:
- You are a local business building your first site and need it live this week
- You want an AI Website Generator to do the first pass
- You will edit everything yourself and do not plan to hand off to an agency
- Price is a significant decision factor
Pick Webflow if:
- You are an agency, SaaS company, or funded startup
- Your designer works in Figma and wants pixel-perfect parity
- You need the site to survive many rounds of iteration without visual rot
- You will eventually hand off to a developer for custom features
My take
Wix is a miracle for the bottom of the market. It has made having-a-website accessible to millions of small businesses who would otherwise have none. For that job, nothing beats it.
But when revenue depends on the site being sharp, fast, and easy to iterate — and when you will be hiring a designer or developer anyway — Webflow’s ceiling is higher. The extra learning curve pays for itself in six months of easier iteration.
FAQ
Can I move a Wix site to Webflow? Yes — it is a manual rebuild. There is no clean Wix-to-Webflow export. Expect 2–4 weeks for a small marketing site.
Is Wix “worse for SEO”? No. That was true five years ago. Today it is competitive on the fundamentals. The remaining differences are at the edges (custom schema, head injection, JS bloat).
What about Wix Studio? Wix Studio closes much of the design-freedom gap and is the right fork of Wix for agencies and professional designers. For agencies I still lean Webflow, but Wix Studio is the only Wix product worth evaluating for serious work.
