Webflow vs Squarespace: beautiful by default vs powerful by design
Squarespace makes average designs look great. Webflow lets great designs breathe. Here is how to pick between them for a serious business site.
If you walked into a coffee shop and asked the barista to build their business a website, they would probably pick Squarespace. It is opinionated, the templates are genuinely beautiful, and the editor forgives mistakes. Webflow is the opposite: it gives you power but demands you know what to do with it.
This is the honest tradeoff.
At a glance
| Webflow | Squarespace | |
|---|---|---|
| Template quality | High | Very high, consistent |
| Design freedom | Very high | Medium-low |
| Ease of use | Medium | Very high |
| CMS | Mature, multi-reference | Good, simpler |
| SEO controls | Granular | Good |
| Ecommerce | Yes | Yes, popular |
| Blogging | Good | Excellent |
| Ideal for | Custom marketing sites | Portfolios, restaurants, small stores |
Design freedom
Squarespace templates look great out of the box. That is the pitch, and they deliver. If you pick a template and fill it with your content, you have a respectable site in an afternoon.
The catch: the ceiling is the template. Squarespace has relaxed this with Fluid Engine, which lets you drag blocks around a grid more freely than the old editor ever allowed. It is a real improvement. It is still not Webflow-level control.
Webflow assumes you (or your designer) has a specific design in mind and gives you the tools to build it exactly. No template to escape. The floor is harder; the ceiling is higher.
CMS and blogging
Squarespace has the best writer-facing blogging experience of any platform in this comparison. The editor is quiet, the typography is sensible, and the mobile preview is honest.
Webflow’s blogging is capable but less opinionated. If writing is the main job of the site, Squarespace feels closer to a native app. If the blog is one part of a larger marketing site, Webflow’s CMS flexibility wins.
SEO
Squarespace SEO has been solid for years. Clean URLs, per-page meta, automatic sitemaps, schema for articles and products — all there. The gap with Webflow is again at the edges: custom schema, per-page <head> injection, and the ability to shape redirects.
For a solo professional’s site, Squarespace SEO is plenty. For a marketing site with a content team and a growth motion, Webflow’s surface area earns back the extra work.
Ecommerce
Both support ecommerce. Squarespace Commerce is more mature and has a better default-store experience. Webflow Ecommerce is improving but is still best for low-SKU, design-led stores.
For serious ecommerce, neither is the right answer — use Shopify. If commerce is a secondary function of a mostly-marketing site, either works.
Pricing
Squarespace and Webflow land in similar territory at the Business tier. Where they diverge is at the bottom (Squarespace has a cheaper personal tier) and at the top (Webflow’s agency and enterprise tiers go much higher).
Who should pick which
Pick Squarespace if:
- You are a solo professional, restaurant, photographer, or small retailer
- You do not have a dedicated designer or developer
- Beautiful defaults matter more than deep customization
- You are primarily blogging or selling fewer than 50 products
Pick Webflow if:
- You have (or are hiring) a designer
- The site design needs to match a specific Figma
- The site will grow past a simple marketing + blog structure
- You will hand off to a developer for custom work
My take
Squarespace is the best answer for a specific kind of site — solo brand, beautiful defaults, low maintenance. It is not the wrong answer; it is the right answer for that user.
For agencies, SaaS teams, and any business where the site is a funnel, Webflow’s ceiling makes the added complexity worthwhile. Squarespace’s constraints start to hurt around the 20-page mark or the first time you want the design to break out of the template grid.
FAQ
Is Squarespace good for SEO? Yes. It has been competitive for years. For 80% of sites, Squarespace SEO is indistinguishable from Webflow SEO in practice.
Can I migrate from Squarespace to Webflow? Yes. Squarespace-to-Webflow migrations are common and have a predictable cost. I break down the hours in the Migration Calculator.
Which platform has better customer support? Squarespace’s 24/7 live chat is a real advantage if you are going it alone. Webflow’s community and Webflow University make up for less real-time support if you are self-sufficient.
Considering a move off Squarespace? I preserve SEO, rebuild your CMS, and hand off a Webflow site that your team can edit. Book a 30-min call to scope it.
